Self care has been marketed into something expensive: candles, spa days, retreats. Real self care is far duller and far more effective. It is the maintenance that keeps you functioning, and most of it is free.

This routine has three layers: daily non-negotiables, a weekly reset, and monthly admin. None of it requires an empty schedule.

The daily five

These five take under thirty minutes combined and cover the essentials of physical and mental maintenance.

  • Ten minutes outside, ideally in daylight before noon.
  • One properly balanced meal you eat sitting down, without a screen.
  • Five minutes of stillness: breathing, journalling or simply sitting.
  • A consistent wind-down before bed with dim lights and no work.
  • One message or call to someone you like.

The weekly reset

Set aside sixty to ninety minutes, ideally the same slot each week. Tidy the space you spend most time in, plan a few meals, look at the week ahead and remove one commitment if the week looks overloaded. Then do something purely for enjoyment with no productive purpose.

Monthly maintenance

Book the appointments you have been postponing: doctor, dentist, hairdresser, eye test. Review finances briefly. Change bedsheets, replace the toothbrush, clear the phone. Administrative care is unglamorous, but unfinished admin generates a constant low hum of stress.

Self care includes saying no

The most powerful self care habit is protecting your time. Every yes is a no to something else, usually rest. Practise a short, kind refusal that you can use without an explanation, and use it before your calendar is already full.

Stop treating care as a reward

Care that only happens after you have earned it will never happen in a busy week. Schedule it as maintenance, the same way you would service a car before it breaks down rather than after.

Frequently asked questions

How much time does self care need?

Around thirty minutes daily and an hour weekly is enough for most people to feel a genuine difference.

Is self care selfish?

No. Depleted people have less to give. Maintenance makes sustained caregiving possible rather than impossible.

What if I have no free time at all?

Start with the five-minute practices and attach them to existing routines. Perfection is not the goal; contact with the habit is.

Conclusion

Pick two of the daily five and one weekly reset slot, and put them in your calendar this week. Care that is scheduled is care that actually happens.
